Home Ground

Kent, England

AA Diploma 15

5th Year 2024

Tutors: Lawrence Barth & Lucy Styles

Using Faversham in Kent as a testing ground, this project proposes a new model of rural development: an intentional community combining production, civic space, and affordable housing. Within a 100m x 100m structure, compact homes are suspended above a flexible ground plane, offering an alternative to the dispersed housing typical across the UK.

A modulated plaza ceiling shapes the landscape below, enabling diverse functions with minimal walls. This ground level accommodates production, gardens, and public space, while remaining porous and connected to surrounding fields and woodland.

Above, the modulated floor mirrors these programmes, generating variation in otherwise similar homes. Each dwelling combines a compressed entrance with a generous living area, oriented both inward and outward to balance retreat with openness to the landscape.
