Kharkiv Freedom Square

Buildner Competition 2024

With Jun Sakamoto & Masaki Hattori

Our proposal for Kharkiv’s Freedom Square introduces subtle interventions linking the plaza with the administrative building while preserving its form. Ground textures and undulating sections reshape the vast square into smaller, human-scale spaces for public activities while keeping openness for gatherings. A meandering water feature leads to a sunken plaza, activating the lower level with new programs.

Two planar canopies anchor the project: one integrates greenery, transport, and sheltered event areas at the square’s edge; the other crowns the building, framing panoramic views and offering a rooftop terrace. Flexible interiors and revitalised underground spaces host workshops and activities, transforming the square and building into a cultural and social catalyst for Kharkiv’s future.
